I’m doing a new thing…

…and I think you’re going to like it.

I’m going to start writing a quick weekly note over on Substack (a blogging platform like this one, but seems to have better features).

What I write here tends to be longer articles on the nichier topic of fund management. I won’t stop doing that here. The new thing over on Substack is aimed squarely at smart people who don’t happen to work in the investment industry, and could do with a bit of guidance on navigating the financial world (smart people who do work in the industry are welcome too of course).

I think this is good news. You may have been with me since the NeverMindTheSilverBullet days — which was non financial stuff for smart people, and the new stuff will have similar vibe, but will sit squarely in the world of everyday personal finance. It’ll be more useful to you than either NMTSB or these Medium posts.

And if you joined for the fund-management-focused writing, I don’t think it’ll disappoint you either. It’s simple and more personal — not dumbed down.

In short; I do a hell of a lot of thinking about how investments impact normal people as part of my day job, and much of that never sees the light of day. Now it will.

The further good news is that, as a subcriber to my writing on Medium, you don’t have to lift a finger to start receiving it. I’ll start sending you emails from that Substack (which is called ‘Wealth Yourself’.) If you don’t want that, unsubcribe here in the next day or so and I won’t include you. Or you can unsubscribe from the Substack itself (I won’t be offended). And rest assured it’s all still free with no adverts or other nasties. No catches here.

For more context, here’s how I described Wealth Yourself to early subcribers over there:

My New Substack — what is it?

Welcome to Wealth Yourself

There’s a dangerous disconnect in the wealth world. It’s the gap between my world — the finance professionals — and yours.

What’s the problem?

You know yourself, but you don’t know finance. Industry insiders know finance, but we don’t know you.

This would be fine if we met in the middle, but we rarely do.

The trouble is, when insiders write investment articles, we’re often writing for the average person. But you’re not the average person. What’s right on average might be wrong for you. And when personal finance goes wrong, it hurts.

That’s what this Substack — ‘Wealth Yourself’ — is for. I won’t give you financial advice; that would be reckless. Instead, I’ll give you advice on financial advice.

Like:

  • When should you accept an expert’s advice?
  • When should you reject it?
  • How do you spot a charlatan?
  • What are the common mistakes, and how can you dodge them?
  • What questions should you be asking?

In other words, I’m teaching you to fish, not deliverooing you a cod and chips.

The Plan

I’ll try to post every Sunday morning. It’ll be whatever’s been pulling my attention. I write longer bits on fund management elsewhere, and it takes me ages — I polish that stuff a lot. They’re also largely for professional investors. But this is different: I’ll type it quick, keep it short, and aim for human.

My plan is to write for one hour once a week, and when I’m done it’s over to you.

There’ll be a few links to interesting books, articles and podcasts too. And if you have a question, fire away.

Sound fair?

Press subscribe and I’ll see you on Sunday…

Simon

That’s it. If you want to pop over early and check it out, here’s the link (although there’s nothing there yet that I haven’t posted here — but that all changes from Sunday).

That’s all! See you on Substack…

Simon
